Why Florida succeeds
where Nevada fails
NAEP scores
demonstrate that education reform really works
By Patrick R. Gibbons
Florida and Nevada have many similarities. Both are sunny tourist states
with large minority populations. Both states spend less on K-12 education,
on average, than do other states. And, back in 1998, students of both states
performed at thoroughly pedestrian levels on the National Assessment of
Educational Progress.
A decade later, we see the two states embarked upon different paths.
The result? Student achievement in math and reading has exploded upward
in Florida, while in Nevada it continues to merely stagnate.
The dramatic results are apparent in NAEP's report on fourth-grade
English reading. Reading is crucial, because students who fail to learn to
read will struggle and become more likely to drop out.
In 1998, Florida's and Nevada's students both scored 206 on the NAEP
reading exam. By 2009, Nevada had improved only marginally, to 211. Florida,
however, was running up the score at 226 — meaning that the average
fourth-grade student in Florida was now more than an entire grade level
ahead of his or her Nevada counterpart.

What could have been
What if Nevada had shown some restraint in education spending?
Patrick R. Gibbons
Tuesday, March 9, 2010
Nevada faces a budget shortfall because its government, once
again, grew too much, too quickly. However, now that the boom is over
and revenues are down, the usual suspects are once again clamoring for a
"broader tax base." In 2008, Terry Lanni, then-CEO of MGM
Mirage, called for "broader" business taxes, asserting that "every large
business that benefits from operating in this state ... [should provide]
... its fair share of funds for the state's needs." He made it clear
that "fair," in his view, meant "taxes not so much on casino resorts."
A year later, the Nevada Legislature once again obliged
— adding another $900 million in "broad" taxes. This was just six years
after lawmakers, at the behest of then-governor Kenny Guinn, had also
increased "broad" Nevada taxes by more than a billion.
It's time proponents of ever-"broader" Nevada taxes
consider what, if anything, those taxes are actually accomplishing.
SHERMAN FREDERICK:
Tax eaters host a dinner
And you're on the menu
Consider the benign-sounding Nevada Vision Stakeholder Group
and be afraid. Very afraid. The tax eaters who run
the Legislature plan to use it to lure you over for dinner and then cook
and eat your wallet, your children's wallet and your children's
children's wallet.

Uniting grassroots organizations
By Sara Crusade
Continuing efforts to unite grassroots
organizations in support of constitutional candidates, Nevada Active
Conservatives hosted a meeting of approximately 300 activists on February
24th at the East Flamingo Library, in Las Vegas.
Unlike the stereotype painted by the mainstream media of
grassroots activists, the attendees at the meeting were diverse and spanned
all walks of life. Also in attendance were many candidates running on a

Profile of Sharron Angle – Republican
challenger to Harry Reid
By Sara Crusade
Sharron Angle , who served eight years in the Nevada State
Assembly, is one of the conservative candidates vying for the Republican
primary win and the chance to unseat incumbent Senator Harry Reid (D-NV) in
the general election. This is the second candidate profile in the series for
this race.
Repeated mischaracterizations have
distorted public perception
By Geoffrey Lawrence
When Nevada lawmakers meet for special sessions to reconcile
differences between revenues and spending, they develop an entirely new
language.
It's a kind of Orwellian double-speak. In this strange tongue, what most
people know as "revenue enhancements" somehow get relabeled as "cuts."
In Nevada's Magical Land of Special Session, lawmakers can have it both
ways — increasing tax revenues or borrowing against the future to prop up
spending, while simultaneously complaining that those measures represent
"cuts" to services.

The case for
concealed-carry firearms
Why Nevada law, legislators and sheriffs
should
support concealed carry, not discourage it
By Ben Robison
How would you feel if, before being able to attend the church of
your choice, you had to apply to the government and get its
approval?
What if you were accused of a crime and before exercising your
Fifth Amendment rights, you had to apply to the government for
permission?
And what if failure to submit the required applications and gain
the proper approvals resulted in gross misdemeanor or even felony
charges against you?
These scenarios may sound absurd, but they are a reality for
Nevadans who desire to exercise their Second Amendment rights and
carry a concealed weapon.
The Second Amendment is clear. The right to keep and carry a
firearm shall not be infringed. However current state law clearly
does infringe that right by requiring that anyone who wishes to
carry, yet not publicly display, the weapon can only do so if he or
she has first applied to the government for a permit — commonly
called a "CCW" — and been approved. This is a clear violation of the
U.S. Constitution.

Health
Care Opposition Needed Now
|
Dear Fellow American,
We are in for the most important political fight of our lifetime. And
we mean life literally. In the future, our very lives may
depend on our actions today.
You probably know at least 1 person who has had a
medical test. If something is found in that first test, the
doctor usually schedules more tests, maybe refers you to a
specialist, and works to determine what the diagnosis is.
Luckily, in our health care system today in America, that
wait is only days or maybe a couple of weeks. And, if the
diagnosis is serious and requires further treatment, doctors
work to treat your problem right away.
Imagine if that wait were months or a year long. Imagine if
some government bureaucrat said, "You will have to wait for 4
months until we have the time and doctors to treat you
This happened to
Shona Holmes.
Had She waited for her nationalized health care in Canada to
diagnose and treat her, she would be dead. Click here to watch
her story on
Patients United Now
and
her Fox News Interview.
The liberal politicians want to take over our health care.
They want control not just of our wallets but also our very
lives. These politicians realize what is at stake. If the bill
passes, bureaucrats in Washington will determine when you can
see a doctor, which doctor you can see, and whether or not you
can be treated.
The bill that will allow the government to take over our
health care was introduced today. It is 1,018 pages long. The
politicians know that if you have time to read the bill you will
not want it. So as usual; Speaker Pelosi and the House are
trying to rush passage of this bill.
Are you willing to fight for control of your personal health
care? Do you want the government to takeover your health care?
The heat is on! It is make or break time.
As of July 15, the Labor and Education Committee in the House
is marking up the bill. That committee will probably pass the
bill out of committee this week Wednesday or Thursday. On
Thursday, the Ways and Means Committee and also the Energy and
Commerce Committee in the House will be marking up the bill.
Those committees are also trying to pass the bill out of
committee this week - as in Thursday or Friday.
If you do not want the government to take control of your
physical well being in addition to your wallets, then you must
act. We all must act quickly, decisively, and relentlessly.
Here is what you can do:
1. Contact your local representative during their August
break as I am sure they would love to hear from you. After
all they work for you and don't let them forget it.
Remember
to ask the four questions in the letter below of their staff.
2. Send the letter below or modify it and send it.
If you sent it before, send it again. The more letters
they receive the better. Either mail it or fax it.
3. Early September burn up the phones again. Call every single Blue Dog Democrat,
those are Democrats who say they are fiscally conservative, (click
here for list and phone numbers).

Proposed Letter to Your Elected Officials
Dear Representative and Senators,
As your constituent and citizen of your state, I am writing to ask
you to vote against any bill that will give the government increased
control over healthcare and will lead to nationalized health care in
the United States.
The accounts of rationing of medical services and
inferior medical care documented in other countries with
nationalized health care cannot be ignored.
In America, while our health care system may not perfect, we are
able to choose our doctors, the doctors determine the best course of
treatment for their patients, and there is no rationing of medical
services.
Additionally, in America, uninsured patients cannot be denied
treatment in public hospital emergency rooms, so those uninsured
patients are able to get the treatment they need in a timely manner.
If you insist on voting for government politicians to take over my
health care, I implore you to do 4 things:
- Pledge and commit to change your health insurance and that
of your
family members' health insurance to this new program.
- Promise and guarantee no Illegal Aliens will be included in
this insurance program.
- Guarantee you will vote against any bill that will lead to
rationing of medical services, that will limit in any way the
ability for a patient to choose his or her doctor, and that will
cause longer wait times before diagnosis and before treatment.
- Guarantee you will vote against any bill that will increase
the cost of medical care through increased taxes, reduced
competition of medical providers, reduced competition of private
sector health insurance.
Will you make these four commitments to your voters and American
taxpayers?
If you will not make these four commitments, what stands in your way
of making these promises to insure that the superior medical care in
America is not compromised in anyway?
Why would you vote for a bill and then be unwilling to live by its
consequences as an example to your constituents?
Please answer these questions in a return mailing to me. I eagerly
await your reply as the future of my physical well being now seems
to be in your hands. Thank you!
Sincerely,
Your Constituent
Next Fight On E-Verify
Please
watch this 3-minute video posted by numbers USA in
the middle of their home page.
It explains why we must still fight before Harry Reid, Nancy
Pelosi, and Obama representatives rip out the 4 amendments discussed
below. He also makes an appeal for everybody to
sign their petition to protect the
enforcement amendments in the Homeland Security spending bill. And I'm
asking for help in spreading the word to tens of millions of Americans.
Senate Adopts Grassley's E-Verify
Amendment - 4th Victory in a Row!
Keep Calling, you got them on the run.....but remember these are
sneaky back stabbers so they could strip all of these Amendments in the
dead of night.
Yesterday, true immigration reformers won two crucial
legislative victories!
During debate the U.S. Senate adopted two crucial amendments.
The first amendment, offered by Senator Jim DeMint
(R-SC), requires DHS to complete all 700 miles of the border fence by
the end of 2010 so that it will not just stop illegal alien vehicle
traffic but also pedestrian traffic.
The second amendment, offered by Senator Jeff
Sessions (R-AL), will protect American jobs by making E-Verify, the
program that allows employers to ensure that they hire legal American
workers, permanent. The Sessions Amendment also requires employers who
do business with the federal government to use the program.
E-Verify is a great tool for America's employers. While
the Sessions Amendment is a great victory for people who want to protect
American jobs, there is another amendment, offered by Senator Chuck
Grassley (R-IA), that the Senate may consider today that would build on
yesterday's victory.
E-Verify only allows employers to check the work authorization
status of new hires but not current employees. Illegal aliens who
currently hold jobs they never should have had can continue in those
jobs because their employer, who may have unknowingly hired that illegal
alien in the past, cannot use E-Verify today to ensure that they employ
only legal workers. Senator Charles Grassley (R-IA) has offered
an amendment that would, for the first time, allow employers to use
E-Verify to check work eligibility for all their employees not just
new hires.
With unemployment now at a 25-year high, the
Grassley Amendment would act as a true stimulus plan for unemployed
Americans! If an employer discovers illegal aliens on his
payroll, that employer can free up jobs for Americans who are out of
work!
Unfortunately, Senate Majority Leader
Harry Reid (D-NV) may attempt to block the Senate from voting on the
Grassley Amendment. Late last night, Reid filed a cloture motion.
This means the Senate could pass the DHS bill without even
allowing a vote on the Grassley Amendment!
Here's what you can do to help pass the Grassley
Amendment and open up illegally-held jobs for American Workers:
- Call your Senators, and tell them to support the
Grassley E-Verify Amendment.
- Urge the Senate to oppose cloture until Senator Grassley gets a
vote on his amendment!
With nearly 15 million Americans out of work and with more
than 8 million illegal aliens holding jobs in the United States
the least Reid can do is allow for an up-or-down vote on this
crucial measure!
- Call Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid at (202)-224-3542.
Tell him that it's unfair that illegal aliens can continue to hold
jobs while so many Americans are hurting. Urge Reid to
ignore special interests and allow the Senate to vote on the
Grassley Amendment!
