Metro Project

LVMPD First Tuesday Program

On the first Tuesday of every month Metro has a meeting on different subjects.  It is basically a marketing effort to reach out to residents of Las Vegas.

We have no problem with these efforts. However, we do have questions about their Wednesday meetings in Spanish to reach out to Illegal Aliens. (see translation below)

Bob is going to coordinate an effort for a few of us to attend these meetings.  It should be interesting. Reach Bob at staff@mmlv.us and put in subject area, "Tues Metro"

Verbatim Translation

Metro Officer David Cienega (shown on screen in a Metro Police Deparment uniform speaking fluent Spanish):  "The Civil Hispanic Academy is held every Wednesday from 6 to 9 p.m.  The course is a duplicate of the course taught in English titled "Citizen's Academy" and was formed for Spanish-speaking persons.

We don't care if you are here LEGALLY OR ILLEGALLY.  We (Metro) will consider them LEGAL CITIZENS because they are here now and we are going to treat them as such."

Jose Ignacio Romero, Univision Reporter:  "According to the authorities, what the police department (Metro) is looking for is to breach the language gap through the means of education."

David Cienega, Metro Officer:  "We want to help them so they will feel that they are part of society here by educating them, letting them know their rights..."

Here's what we need to do:

1. Go to the Tuesday meetings.

2.  Be polite & courteous, but ask Metro why they feel it is necessary to educate people who are in our country illegally.

3.  Then sit back and take bets with your friends on which of the responses they give.

     a.  Did not know we have this program.

     b.  The only way we can do our job is if we "Win the hearts and minds" of the illegal community.  Remember how well that worked in Vietnam?

     c.  The illegal aliens are hard working people and we need to make them legal citizens of our city.

4.  You'll be amazed at how many people in the room, those pesty law abiding citizens, don't know about this new "Illegal Outreach" program.

5.  Give feed back to Bob.  Email him at staff@mmlv.us and in the subject area put "Tues Metro Feedback"
